8 Problematic Dopamine Seeking Behaviours in ADHD
Monday Jan 22, 2024
Monday Jan 22, 2024
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain which allows brain cells to communicate with each other. It's associated with the reward system and plays a big role in memory, mood, motivation, working towards goals and how we learn.
In ADHD, Dopamine levels are lower than in the neurotypical brain, so people with ADHD are constantly seeking big Dopamine hits. This leads to inattention, impulsivity, engaging in risky behaviour and the need for instant gratification.
I'm going to look at 8 common potentially problematic ways that people with ADHD go Dopamine seeking:
Alcohol and drug taking
Behavioural addiction such as gambling, sex, gaming and social media
Binge eating
Novelty seeking
Making impulsive, unwise decisions
Impulsive spending
The Internet rabbit hole
Engaging in risky behaviours
Tomorrow I'll be talking about positive ways to use Dopamine seeking. Make sure you subscribe or follow so you don't miss it.

Looking back over my son's school life now he's in his last year at school, I've identified 5 things that have caused me more than mild annoyance.
There are schools and teachers doing good work and we need more of that!!!
The 5 things that I identified:
Children with ADHD get in trouble A LOT. Even for stuff they haven't done
Kids with ADHD are expected to do what is completely impossible for them to do
Kids with ADHD spend a LOT of time in nurture rooms
Yes we've tried a bloody reward chart!!!
Parents of kids with ADHD get judged. A LOT
If you've had any similar experiences, please get in touch to help shape training for teachers in ADHD. email: emma@rethink-adhd.co.uk
